On 20 March 2025, the Charity Commission launched a formal investigation into the Plymouth Islamic Education Trust (PIETY) under section 46 of the Charities Act 2011, due to concerns that there may have been wrongdoing or poor management in how the charity has been run.

The charity located in Plymouth  works ‘to advance the faith of Islam in Plymouth and the counties of Devon and Cornwall’. This decision came after the charity repeatedly failed to send in its accounts and other legal documents on time, despite being reminded many times over the years.

The Commission had been in contact with PIETY since 2014 and even placed the charity in its "double defaulter" list twice. This means PIETY failed to submit its accounts for two or more years out of the last five, something the law strictly requires all registered charities to do.

The Commission had been in contact with PIETY since 2014 and even placed the charity in its "double defaulter" list twice.

The charity is now under a formal inquiry, which is a serious step taken when there are concerns about how a charity is being run. The investigation will look at whether the trustees – the people responsible for running the charity – have been fulfilling their legal duties, especially when it comes to finances, annual reporting, and following previous warnings.

The inquiry will also check if there has been any poor management or misconduct. According to the Charity Commission, its aim is to make sure charities follow the law, stay trustworthy, and serve the people they were set up to help.
