Al-Manar Trust in Cardiff under investigation by The Charity Commission

The Charity Commission has launched an official investigation into Al-Manar Centre Trust, a Cardiff-based Islamic charity, after a video shared on its Facebook page raised serious concerns. Although the video was not made by the charity itself, its content may have appeared to show support for Hamas, a proscribed group that is classified as a terrorist organisation by the UK government.
This caused alarm about how the charity manages its social media platforms. The post, made in November 2023, has since been removed by the trustees after the Charity Commission stepped in. The charity has also taken steps to strengthen its online policies and ensure such issues do not happen again.

Al-Manar Centre Trust, founded in 2009, works to promote Islamic education and build community harmony in Cardiff. However, the Commission is now looking into whether the charity's trustees properly followed their legal duties in running and managing the charity. This includes reviewing whether the trustees are doing enough to protect the charity from being used in a way that may be harmful or illegal.
If more concerns arise, the inquiry may widen. Once the investigation ends, a full report will be published to explain what happened and what action, if any, was taken.
