Grand Iftar of Bristol inside Easton Jamia Mosque

The Easton Jamia Masjid Grand Iftar has long been a hallmark of community cohesion and cultural celebration in Bristol. Traditionally held on St Marks Road, this event has garnered acclaim for fostering unity among diverse communities. In 2025, due to overwhelming demand and unpredictable weather conditions, the organisers made the unprecedented decision to host the Iftar inside the Easton Jamia Mosque.
The Easton Jamia Mosque, located in the heart of Easton, has been a central hub for the Muslim community for decades. Its spacious interiors and welcoming atmosphere made it an ideal venue for this year's Grand Iftar. The event was scheduled for Sunday, 23rd March, commencing at 6:00 PM.
The decision to move the event indoors was met with widespread approval. In previous years, the open-air setting on St Marks Road, while picturesque, posed challenges due to unpredictable weather. Hosting the Iftar inside the mosque ensured that attendees could partake in the Grand Iftar without concerns about the elements. Moreover, the mosque's environment provided a deeper connection to the spiritual essence of Ramadan.

The Grand Iftar serves as more than just a communal meal. It is a bold testament to Bristol's rich tapestry of cultures and the city's commitment to fostering a climate of community cohesion. Non-Muslim residents are encouraged to join, offering them a firsthand experience of the breaking of the fast and an opportunity to learn about Islamic traditions and practices. This atmosphere fosters mutual respect and understanding among the city's diverse populace.
For the Grand Iftar hosted by the Easton Jamia Masjid in 2023, Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “It is exciting to see Muslims for Bristol extend the Grand Iftar to the city centre and to be able to celebrate the month of Ramadan on College Green with people from across Bristol. We are a proud city of many cultures and faiths."
"This is an opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of the Muslim communities, come together, share food, and learn more about each other, and the significance of Ramadan and the Iftar meal for Muslims."
Preparations for the event were meticulous. The St Marks Road Community Group, in collaboration with the Easton Jamia Mosque, ensured that the evening was both spiritually enriching and logistically seamless. Volunteers from various backgrounds came together to decorate the mosque, prepare meals, and coordinate activities. Their collective effort exemplified the spirit of unity that the Grand Iftar aims to promote.
The menu for the evening was a culinary journey, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of Bristol's Muslim community. Traditional dishes from South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa were served, allowing attendees to savour a variety of flavours. This culinary diversity not only delighted the palate but also highlighted the global nature of the Muslim ummah (community).
Beyond the meal, the event featured cultural performances, Quran recitations, and storytelling sessions. These activities provided insights into Islamic history and the significance of Ramadan. Children participated in interactive sessions, learning about the values of charity, patience, and gratitude. Such engagements aim to instil a sense of Islamic identity and understanding in younger Muslim generations.
