Eid Prayer broadcasted live on TV

On 31 March 2025, the BBC made history by broadcasting Eid al-Fitr prayers live from Bradford Central Mosque. This was the first time that a major British television channel aired Eid prayers, allowing viewers across the country to witness this important moment for Muslims. The programme, called "Eid Live," was hosted by Jason Mohammad, a well-known Welsh presenter from BBC’s "Final Score."
The broadcast featured recitation from the Qur’an, an Eid sermon delivered in both English and Arabic, and the congregational prayer. It ended with worshippers exchanging Eid greetings, creating a moment of unity and joy. For many British Muslims, seeing their religious celebration on national television was emotional and quite meaningful.
This coverage was significant because Muslims in the UK are often represented in the media in specific contexts. However, this broadcast focused purely on the religious and spiritual aspects of Islam, showing the beauty of prayer and community.
Airing the Eid prayer was also important in building understanding between different communities. Many non-Muslims watching the programme may have learned more about the significance of Eid and the importance of prayer in Islam. By sharing this experience with the wider public, the broadcast helped to break down barriers and promote a better understanding of the Islamic faith.
For Muslims, seeing the event live on television also encouraged a greater sense of belonging. It reminded them that their faith is an integral part of British society. The coverage showed Islam in a peaceful and uplifting way, helping to counteract negative stereotypes and highlighting the importance of faith in the lives of millions of people.
The airing of Eid Live raises hopes that similar programmes may be shown in the future. Just as Christmas and other religious celebrations are widely covered on television, this broadcast has paved the way for greater recognition of Islamic festivals in mainstream media. If continued, such initiatives could further strengthen community ties and ensure that British Muslims feel a part of the cultural and religious landscape of the UK.
