Aberdeen Mosque Vandalised During Ramadan

On the evening of Saturday, 15th March 2025, Aberdeen Mosque and Islamic Centre was subjected to a distressing vandalism incident during the holy month of Ramadan. Worshippers gathered for evening prayers were disrupted by acts that have since been condemned as "wilful and despicable."
The unsettling events unfolded in two phases. Around 9 pm, individuals defaced the mosque by hurling white paint at its main entrance and the adjacent pavement. This act not only marred the mosque's appearance but also symbolised a blatant disrespect towards a place of worship. Shortly after the initial vandalism, a rock was forcefully thrown through one of the mosque's windows, shattering the glass. At the time, worshippers were inside observing their prayers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the community was left shaken by the brazenness of the act.
In the face of adversity, the Aberdeen community showcased remarkable solidarity. Neighbours and mosque attendees promptly collaborated to clean the defaced areas. Their swift action not only restored the mosque's appearance but also reinforced communal bonds. The mosque received an outpouring of support from various quarters, with many expressing their condemnation of the vandalism and extending their sympathies to the affected community.
A spokesperson for the Aberdeen Mosque and Islamic Centre expressed gratitude, stating: "Following these attacks on the mosque, kind neighbours and worshippers united to help clean up the mess, whilst others sent messages of support. We are very grateful to our neighbours and well-wishers in these difficult times."
Law enforcement agencies responded promptly to the incident. Police Scotland arrested and charged a 17-year-old male in connection with the vandalism. The teenager has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. In light of the attack, local authorities have assured the community of heightened security.
The mosque's administration has urged vigilance among its attendees. However, they emphasised that worshippers should not be alarmed and encouraged them to continue their spiritual practices during Ramadan.
